2011 Alves de Sousa Giavosa Primeiros Anos Red Field Blend

2011 Alves de Sousa Giavosa Primeiros Anos Red Field Blend

The Alves de Sousa winery is located in the iconic Douro Valley to the east of the city of Porto in Northern Portugal. The winery producers the classic fortified wines of the region, but producers some of the best dry wines of the region. Using traditional field blends these wines has a depth and complexity that is hard to find.

The Primeiros Anos comes from the vineyards surrounding the winery and family home. The wine is an exciting fuller bodied red that shows the complexity field blends can bring.

Style - Exciting and easy drinking, fuller bodied red

Tell me about the grape - Douro red field blend (Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, etc.)

Historically in the Douro Valley vineyards were not planted to one variety, rather a mix of grapes all harvest at the same time to give complexity and mitigate for vintage variations.  They tend to show a cross-section of fruit from fresh red berries, through to slightly dried/stewed black fruit.

Serving suggestion - 16-18*C

Cellaring potential - 5-10 years (worth decanting an hour before drinking)

Food matching - Grilled flank steak with lightly dressed green salad

You may like this if you drink - Barossa Shiraz or McLaren Valley Grenache
