There's just something about Abruzzo… falling prey to the old adage about infrastructure in Italy that the further south you go the worse it gets. The drive up to this particular winery causes you to seriously question whether wine could ever taste good enough to make the risk worth it. But then you arrive at somewhere like Tiberio. A relatively affordable white like their Pecorino falls from the bottle into your glass to kick off a tasting and immediately you forget that half an hour ago you were questioning making the journey.
Tiberio is not exactly a hidden gem anymore either, the single vineyard Trebbiano 'Fonte Canale' is being hailed as one of the great whites of Italy, with quality seeming to increase year on year. It is an exciting wine to drink and one that I look forward tracking its evolution in the bottle in years to come. But what constantly surprises and make this a winery that we are proud to represent is how the wines consistently over deliver on their price point, offering quality and personality, which is hard to find. The entry wines are great touchstones for the region as a whole and tend to give you an insight to what the region has to offer.
What I appreciate about winemaker Cristiana Tiberio and brother Antonio, is that they are always looking for a challenge, for new ways to improve what they do. When speaking about vintage, Cristiana views the great years as 'boring', where the quality of the grapes is good and the wines virtually make themselves. It is the challenging years, where the grapes struggle to reach optimal ripeness whilst being healthy, where the winemakers are pushed to achieve something special in adverse conditions.`Similar to some of the Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy, Tiberio tend to consistently produce great wines, where as some of the lesser vineyards need a perfect year to make them special.
All I can suggest is that you try these. They are wines that are perfect to drink now but will last for plenty of time to come in the cellar. If you are trying to expand your palette of great Italian wine (or great wine in general), look no further.
TASTE WHY WE FELL IN LOVE
At this price, for the quality of the wine in this bottle you can’t go wrong. Fresh, balanced and full of minerality like wines of a far higher price point.
From a block of old vine Trebbiano grown on pergolas. Fonte Canale is a lean mineral expression, that is more often compared with Chablis than other wines from Abruzzo.
Our of a single block of Montepulciano comes a singular expression of the grape. The result is a wine that sits between Burgundy and Sicily. One of the most exciting wines I've tried.
